West Brom defender Dara O’Shea is facing at least four months out with a serious ankle injury, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 22-year-old broke down on international duty with Republic of Ireland against Portugal earlier this week.

A West Brom source has told Football Insider that scans have showed that O’Shea is set to be sidelined until next year.

O'Shea underwent a scan in Dublin following his side's defeat to Portugal on Wednesday.

He then returned to West Brom for further assessment and the results were a devastating blow for the player as well as his club.

Baggies boss Valerien Ismael is close to a defensive crisis at The Hawthorns, with summer signing Matt Clarke already sidelined.

Clarke is expected to be out for another four weeks after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win at Blackburn Rover last month.

O'Shea has enjoyed a fine start to the 2021-22 campaign.

He has not missed a single minute of Championship action thus far and scored against Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

His performances helped Albion climb to second in table prior to the international break.

Ismael has adopted a three-man defence in the early stages of the season.

It remains to be seen whether the 45-year-old will tweak his system to account for the injuries to Clarke and O'Shea.

Cedric Kipre will likely be called upon if Ismael decides to stick with his current formation.

The Baggies welcome Millwall to The Hawthorns on Saturday.
