But one of the cheaper, less heralded signings of last year has the United coaching staff at Thorpe Arch increasingly convinced he has a massive future ahead of him.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that teenage forward Sam Greenwood has blown Marcelo Bielsa and his backroom team away with his promise and potential to be a bona fide Premier League star.
To say the 19-year-old is highly thought of is an understatement, with the word "phenomenal" regularly used to describe him behind the scenes.
Greenwood is part of a United Under-23s front four - along with Joe Gelhardt, Crysencio Summerville and recent signing Amari Miller - who are generating huge enthusiasm among the club's vast fan base.
He has played only once for the Leeds first team - in the FA Cup last season - but has been an unused substitute in the Premier League already this term.
In Premier League 2, the highest level of age-group football in England, Greenwood is making a big impression.
He followed up his goal against Tottenham last week with his second in two Under-23s games in Monday night's 3-2 win over Derby County.
Operating in a centre-forward role, his raw physical qualities of pace and finishing stand out a mile in youth football as does his link play, touch and game understanding.
Leeds know they have a real talent on their hands.
Greenwood was signed from Arsenal in the summer of 2020 for a fee that could eventually rise to £3million if all add-ons are achieved.
He made his debut in the FA Cup in January against Crawley Town and also finished top scorer for their Under-23s in last season's title-winning campaign.
Other clubs have started to sit up and take notice.
As revealed by Football Insider on 3 September, Leeds rejected offers from six clubs for Greenwood before the transfer window shut last week.
Bielsa is not one for populist moves, or ever being railroaded into a selection.
He will hand Greenwood first-team opportunities only when he is deemed to be fit and ready.
That may still be some time away, as there are plenty of elite forwards ahead of him in the pecking order, including Patrick Bamford, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Jack Harrison and Tyler Roberts as well as new signing James.
