Portsmouth have made an approach to sign Wolves defender Dion Sanderson this month as they look to beat EFL clubs to his signature, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League club have decided to loan out the centre-back, 20, this month after the green light from manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

A Portsmouth source has told Football Insider that the club have registered their interest in recruiting Sanderson by contacting Wolves.

A number of other Football League clubs are keen on taking Sanderson on loan during this  transfer window, including League Two duo Plymouth Argyle and Cheltenham Town.

Wolves must now decide which club would be best for the development of the rising star.

Sanderson is highly rated at Molineux after progressing from the the club's youth ranks to make his first-team debut in the League Cup derby against Aston Villa in October.

This came after he was handed a new long-term contract last June, further evidence of how highly he is regarded at the top-flight outfit.

The centre-back, who is the nephew of Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson, has been a regular in the Wolves Under-23s side this season in Premier League 2.

Portsmouth can offer the youngster regular first-team football as they plot their return to the Championship.

Kenny Jackett's side are 10th in the division, but only one point adrift of the play-offs and sixth-placed Peterborough United.
