Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth is the leading contender for the Queens Park Rangers manager's job and an approach is imminent, sources have told Football Insider.

Queens Park Rangers are searching for a new manager after sacking Neil Critchley over the weekend after just 12 games in charge at Loftus Road.

The west London club decided to remove Critchley after going 10 Championship games without a win to leave the club languishing in 17th spot in the Championship table, eight points above the relegation zone.

Former QPR player Ainsworth would be a popular choice among R's fans to take charge at Loftus Road and the club are expected to firm up their interest with an approach in the next few days.

The Wycombe boss extended his contract at Adams Park Stadium back in June but had been on the shortlist at QPR before Michael Beale was given the job.

Wycombe are currently seventh in League One with 53 points from 31 games and have won their last five games in a row.

Queens Park Rangers sit 17th in the Championship and have been struggling since former boss Beale quit for Rangers in November, just six months into his contract and shortly after turning down the Wolves job, citing loyalty to the Championship side.

The club have won just two games since Beale's exit, their last victory coming back in December with a 1-0 win over Preston.

They host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (25 February), where they will be hoping to recover some much needed points.
