Sheffield United have promised players their promotion bonuses will be paid by the end of September, Football Insider understands.

The Blades are struggling with cash flow issues this summer, and the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday (9 August) that players are still owed as much as £8million in bonuses.

The Yorkshire side had one of the most generous bonus schemes in the country last season as they pushed for Premier League promotion to save the club’s finances.

Each player is owed between £250,000 to £400,000 in bonuses depending on how many appearances they made for the side last season.

The payments have already been deferred by the club, but they insist the bonuses will eventually be honoured within contract stipulations.

United will earn around £170million for their promotion to the top flight, and Football Insider understands their first payment from the Premier League arrived in mid-July.

Despite receiving their first instalment of Premier League broadcast money, United have delayed bonus payments and now intend to pay players by the end of next month.

Owner Prince Abdullah has debated selling the club after being subject to a number of takeover bids, but he looks set to retain control during the 2023/24 campaign.

The Blades have endured a very difficult summer transfer window so far, losing star striker Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille while Sander Berge completed a move to fellow promoted side Burnley.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side kick off their Premier League campaign with a visit from Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
