Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth are among multiple clubs racing to sign Chelsea midfielder Tariq Uwakwe, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old is in the final six months of his Stamford Bridge contract and the Premier League giants are ready to let him move this month with a sell-on clause included in the deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth as well as Motherwell and other League One clubs have expressed an interest in signing Uwakwe this month.

The midfielder has made six appearances for Chelsea's U23 side this term and has scored once.

Uwakwe spent last season on loan at League One side Accrington Stanley, where he made 21 appearances.

His most impressive performance in a Stanley shirt came in the EFL Trophy against Leeds under-23's.

He scored a hat-trick and added an assist in a 7-0 win.

The former England under-20 international has come through the ranks at Chelsea after joining the club at the age of eight.

However, his 14-year affiliation with the Blues appears to be coming to an end as he searches for regular first-team football.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore is a long-time admirer of Uwakwe and took the 22-year-old on trial last summer.

Speaking after the end of the trial period, Moore insisted he was "quite impressed", adding that the starlet had done "really well".

Wednesday and Portsmouth are looking to bolster their promotion credentials with both sides currently outside the League One play-off spots.

The sides are level on points with Pompey having the advantage of an extra game in hand.
