Sheffield Wednesday are racing multiple EFL clubs to sign Watford defender Mattie Pollock this month, sources have told Football Insider.

Burton Albion and Exeter City have made approaches to the Hornets for the central defender.

Blackpool, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Shrewsbury are all weighing up moves for Pollock.

Pollock, 21, who turned down the chance to join Hibernian in the summer to fight for his place at Watford, has made four appearances in all competitions this season.

The Hornets are happy to loan out Pollock before the close of the transfer window so that he can continue his development with regular first-team football.

The centre-back made his first Watford appearance since October on Saturday (7 January) with a 90-minute outing in the 2-0 FA Cup loss against Reading.

Pollock spent the entirety of last season on loan at League One club Cheltenham, registering three goals and two assists in 39 games.

He joined Watford for a reported initial fee of £250,000 in 2021 after coming through the ranks at Grimsby Town.

The youngster has struggled to get past the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Kourtney Hause, and Craig Cathcart in the Vicarage Road pecking order.

Blackpool, who currently sit in the Championship bottom three, are seeking to bolster their defensive options in order to avoid relegation to the third tier.

Meanwhile - Sheffield Wednesday, Burton, Barnsley, Charlton, Shrewsbury, and Exeter will be hoping Pollock can replicate the form he showed at third-tier Cheltenham in the 2021-22 season.

The 6ft 3in former Leeds United trainee is out of contract at Watford in June 2026.
