Dean Smith wants to lure a striker to Norwich City in January as well as a creative midfielder, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

A Norwich source has told Football Insider that Smith also wants a Premier League-calibre frontman who can spearhead the attack.

The newly-appointed manager wants to set up his side in the same 4-3-3 formation that he favoured for most of his Villa reign.

Under Daniel Farke, Norwich often deployed a 4-2-3-1 system.

This was occasionally developed into a 4-3-3 when the wide attackers pushed forward.

Tottenham are the only other side yet to reach double figures for goals this season.

Relegation rivals Newcastle and Watford have each scored 12, leaving Norwich well off the pace in terms of goalscoring.

Star man Teemu Pukki, 31, has started every league game this season but has only scored three times in 11 outings.

Summer signing Josh Sargent, 21, has failed to find the net in ten appearances.

Smith has immediately identified creativity as a key issue and will attempt to make amends with the signing of a top striker in January.

The Canaries remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, level with winless Newcastle on five points.

Aston Villa

Farke saw his reign end the same day he led his side to a first win of the season.

They are next in action against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
