Tony Mowbray is fighting for his job at Sunderland despite Saturday's 2-1 win over Rotherham, sources have told Football Insider.

The 59-year-old eased the pressure on his position by overseeing the victory at the Stadium of Light, which came courtesy of a Jobe Bellingham double.

However, there is believed to be tension behind the scenes between Mowbray and Sunderland chiefs including over transfers, according to sources.

Mowbray's position as manager is under growing scrutiny as the club hierarchy assesses a potential manager change.

The experienced manager has a contract with the Black Cats that runs until the end of the season.

Sunderland's win over Rotherham was their first of the 2023/24 campaign, with Mowbray starting the season with consecutive losses to Ipswich Town and Preston in the Championship and a penalty shootout defeat to Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup.

He was backed in the transfer window with six new arrivals, including Jenson Seelt, Jobe Bellingham and two free transfers in the shape of Bradley Dack and Luis Semedo.

Mowbray replaced Alex Neil at the Stadium of Light last summer and led Sunderland to the playoffs during his first season in charge.

The Black Cats finished sixth after a dramatic final-day win over Preston in 2022/23, but were knocked out of the playoffs by Luton Town.

Sunderland's Championship campaign resumes next Saturday (26 August) with a trip to Coventry City, who played out a 1-1 draw with Swansea this weekend.
