Walsall academy manager Miguel Llera is in the frame for the MK Dons manager's job, Football Insider has learned.

The former defender, 42, is highly regarded in coaching circles and is eager to take the first step into management.

A Dons source has told Football Insider that Llera is a contender for the vacant post after Russell Martin quit to take over at Swansea City last week.

The Spaniard is a former MK Dons player and holds a UEFA Pro, A and B Licence and a PDP Advanced Youth Award.

He was well travelled during his playing days, making appearances for eleven clubs.

Llera turned out for MK Dons, Charlton, Blackpool, Brentford, Sheffield Wednesday and Scunthorpe during his time in the UK.

His coaching career began in 2014 as he took charge of Wednesday's under 14 side.

In January 2016, Llera even launched his own academy, the Miguel Llera International Football Academy.

The Spaniard also coached at Chesterfield and Sheffield FC before arriving at Walsall.

On 1st August, Mk Dons announced Martin was leaving the club to join Swansea.

This came less than 24 hours after an initial statement in which the club said they were "extremely disappointed" with Swansea's actions.

The approach came less than a day before the club's first competitive game of the season.

MK Dons drew 3-3 with Bolton in their first league game of the season last weekend.

Meanwhile, Walsall lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers.
