Former Bristol City winger Marley Watkins is training with Cardiff City as he looks for a new club, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Wales international, 30, is a free agent after leaving City upon his contract at Ashton Gate expiring last month.

A Cardiff source has told Football Insider that manager Mick McCarthy has invited Watkins to join them for pre-season training so that he can have a look at him in close quarters.

A number of other Championship, League One and Scottish Premiership clubs are also understood to be weighing up moves for the versatile attacker.

The Bluebirds are in the market for a new winger this summer after seeing Junior Hoilett, Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo leave at the end of last season.

McCarthy is understood to be an admirer of Watkins and could offer him a deal at the Cardiff City Stadium if he impresses during his training stint.

Watkins’ free agent status would fit the bill for Cardiff as McCarthy is working under a tight budget during this summer's transfer window.

Watkins spent the first half of last season on loan at Aberdeen and scored two goals in nine games before injury interrupted his spell.

He made only two brief appearances off the bench upon his return to Bristol City after finding his first-team chances limited under Nigel Pearson.

Watkins moved from Barnsley to Bristol City in 2018 and made 29 appearances during his time at the club.

His most prolific spell came at Oakwell as he scored 10 goals in 45 outings during the 2016-17 season.

The attacker has also played for Cheltenham, Bath and Hereford during a well-travelled career.
