Sources: West Brom, Bristol City and Coventry City in race to sign Middlesbrough star Taylor

West Brom, Bristol City and Coventry City are in the hunt to sign Middlesbrough defender Neil Taylor in January, Football Insider has learned.

The 32-year-old left-back’s short- term at Boro expires on Saturday (1 January) after he became Chris Wilder’s first signing in November.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Boro want to extend Taylor’s contract but face possible competition from Championship rivals West Brom, Bristol City and Coventry.

The trio are all keen to take advantage of the defender's situation and add some proven Championship experience to their ranks.

Taylor became a free agent last year after his contract at Aston Villa came to an end.

While he failed to join a new club during the summer, Boro offered him a short-term deal in November.

Manager Wilder insisted the Wales international would provide competition for first-choice left-back Marc Bola.

Taylor made his debut in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth last month and also started in the 2-0 win versus Nottingham Forest.

He has been included in every matchday squad since his arrival.

With his short-term deal coming to an end, Middlesbrough are keen to tie him down an extended contract.

However, Taylor could have offers on the table from other Championship clubs.

West Brom are in the market for new defenders after faltering in their promotion push.

The Baggies currently sit fourth in the table after just two wins in their last eight games.

Coventry have also shown interest as they look to consolidate their mid-table position after promotion to the second tier.

Meanwhile, Bristol City, currently sitting in 18th, want reinforcements this month to try climb the table.

In other news, Middlesbrough are in talks to sign two strikers this month.
