Sources: West Brom make contact with McInnes in latest manager twist
West Brom have made contact with Derek McInnes after the collapse of talks with David Wagner, Football Insider understands.
The Baggies reached an agreement with the former Huddersfield Town boss on Tuesday night only for negotiations to end this morning.
A club source has told Football Insider Wagner is instead set to become the new manager of Swiss club Young Boys.
That is a major blow to West Brom, whose managerial search has been a very bumpy one.
The club have now approached McInnes, who has been on their list of potential candidates since the start.
Critically, the 49-year-old is without a club since his Aberdeen exit in March and there will not be the need for any compensation to be paid.
McInnes played for West Brom between 2000 and 2003, making 100 appearances for the club.
He was fired by his most recent employers after his side experienced a horrendous start to 2021.
Aberdeen only scored one goal in their last nine matches under the leadership of McInnes.
The Paisley-born boss took the Aberdeen job in 2013 and won the Scottish League Cup during his first season in charge.
While Dons manager, McInnes was approached by Sunderland and Rangers about taking the manager's job at the respective clubs.
He stayed with Aberdeen on both occasions and was handed a one-year contract extension after turning down the Sunderland move.
Before managing at Pittodrie, McInnes had spells in charge of Bristol City and St Johnstone.
Sam Allardyce took over from Slaven Bilic in December but was unable to keep Albion in the Premier League.
He leaves The Hawthorns after being relegated for the first time in his managerial career.
