Russell Martin is just a handful of matches away from being sacked by Southampton, sources have told Football Insider.

The newly promoted Premier League side have begun compiling a shortlist of potential new managers.

Sources have told Football Insider that Martin is expected to be sacked if the Saints do not pick up any points against Bournemouth and Arsenal before the upcoming international break.

Southampton are one of six teams yet to win a game in the Premier League this season and they sit in 18th place after the opening five fixtures.

The Saints came close to securing their first win on Saturday (21 September) as they led against Ipswich Town until Sam Morsy scored a 95th-minute equaliser.

Russell Martin is under increasing pressure at Southampton

The draw at the weekend saw Southampton pick up their first point of the new campaign, but it wasn’t enough to get them out of the relegation zone.

Martin’s side have only scored two goals this season, which is the lowest in the division as his attacking style of player is yet to have the desired impact.

Directors in Southampton’s boardroom want Martin to adopt a more pragmatic style rather than just stick rigidly to his preferred more expansive system.

The Saints are back in action on Monday (30 September) when they travel to face Bournemouth.
