Stefan Borson baffled by Liverpool transfer 'tactic', they should have signed star who 'wanted to join them'

Liverpool are at risk of missing out on a place in the Champions League as they continue to face defensive issues this season. 

Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City on Sunday (8 February), leaving Arne Slot’s side sitting sixth in the Premier League table. 

Marc Guehi lined up in the Man City backline at Anfield, but he could have been playing in red had circumstances been different. 

Guehi’s proposed move to Liverpool collapsed last summer after a £35million deal had been agreed with Crystal Palace. 

Man City signed Guehi in a £20m deal last month after Liverpool decided against making another bid for his services.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Liverpool should have signed Guehi in the January transfer window. 

Jeremy Jacquet joined Liverpool on deadline day (2 February) in a deal worth around £60m from Rennes, but he is set to remain with the French side until the summer. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I believe Jacquet is a fantastic player or fantastic prospect. 

“I don't massively understand Liverpool's tactic here. They're another team who, to me, from the outside looking in, clearly need at least one player in that position between now and the end of the season. 

“They've got loads to play for. If I was them, I would have bought Guehi, to be honest. I'm sure he would have gone there.” 

How Liverpool could have made big 'saving' on Guehi deal

Borson insisted Liverpool could have made significant savings on Guehi’s transfer fee given his contract at Palace was set to expire on 30 June. 

“I would have paid the money and made the £50m saving on his transfer fee, giving him half of it or whatever, and put him right up there in terms of the wage earners at Liverpool,” said Borson. 

“They wouldn't have had to have paid him what they pay Van Dijk, so it wouldn't have been a problem there. 

“You could have paid him a big signing-on fee. Everybody would have understood. But anyway, they chose not to do that.” 

Guehi has started in all three of his appearances since joining Man City, with Pep Guardiola’s side claiming seven points from those matches.
