Stefan Borson shares Gianni Infantino resignation verdict after FIFA 'outrage' and what it means for Jarell Quansah ban

Gianni Infantino will have no desire to step down as President of FIFA despite calls for his resignation at the 2026 World Cup.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the whole situation will "blow over" in time.

Supporters were furious when Folarin Balogun's red card was suspended so that the USA striker could feature against Belgium, a game in which they lost 4-1 on Tuesday, 7 July.

Many have seen the result as justice, given that the Monaco star should have been unavailable for the game, but Jarell Quansah's two-game ban has made the situation much worse.

An increasing number have dubbed the FIFA President "corrupt," especially after it was revealed that he spoke to Donald Trump about Balogun's red card before it was suspended.

Head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, has also been forced to deny allegations following Argentina's thrilling 3-2 win over Egypt, as more fans continue to hit out at some of the tournament organiser's decisions.

Gianni Infantino here to stay despite World Cup 'outrage'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson admitted that the Balogun situation must never happen again, but poured cold water over the idea of any resignations at FIFA.

"He's not going to step down, but clearly it's an outrage and clearly we know what happened. It's self-evident what happened," he said.

"But he's not going to resign and it'll blow over. People's perception of FIFA will not be great. But fortunately, Belgium won the game and that stops us going through a whole process of litigation to change it.

"It's definitely an arguable sending off. But why should it be suspended? Just because the decision on Balogun was so ridiculous doesn't mean that Quansah should be allowed to play.

"It's just not the right way round. What should happen is that there should be action taken to make sure that the Balogun situation never happens again."

Can England appeal against Jarell Quansah's red card?

It has emerged that Thomas Tuchel will be without another right-back option for two games following Quansah's sending off against Mexico.

The majority of supporters were simply expecting a one-match ban, but the former Liverpool defender could now miss the semi-finals if the Three Lions reach it.

While there is no mechanism in FIFA's rules to appeal against the decision, the FA are understood to be exploring their options, especially after the controversy around Balogun.

Understandably, the ban has sparked outrage amongst those back in England, but should the decision stand, Tuchel may have to find yet another solution for the right-back spot.
