Stefan Borson: This is how much compensation Man United may have to pay Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim is continuing to fight for his job after facing a challenging year in the Manchester United hot seat. 

Amorim was drafted in to replace Erik ten Hag last November, but he has largely struggled to turn things around at Old Trafford. 

Man United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland eased some of the pressure ahead of the upcoming international break, with the goals coming from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko. 

However, former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Amorim’s “negativity” is impacting his Man United stars as questions continue to be asked about his position. 

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man United chiefs will be looking at the bigger picture when deciding on Amorim’s future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains determined to back Amorim despite the building pressure and is keen to give him time to prove himself. 

Man United currently sit 10th in the Premier League table after picking up 10 points from their opening seven games of the season. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the cost of sacking Amorim, Borson said: “I would think Amorim is around probably £10million by the time you put in his coaching staff and that's even after apparently there's a discount if it's after the first year. 

“It’s more expensive in the first year and then reduces after 1 November, which I think is the anniversary. 

“So, they want to avoid it but ultimately you have to do what's best for the team and what's best on the pitch.” 

Man United are not playing in Europe this season after finishing 15th in the Premier League table in 2024-25.

Old Trafford chiefs are currently willing to give Amorim time, with the victory over Sunderland helping his cause heading into the international break. 

Borson said: “The way that they'll look at it is each place is worth let's say £3m. 

“Do we think by sacking him that we're going to deliver three higher places in the league and that pays for itself, or probably even more critical will we improve our chances of getting back into Europe next season, which is going to be also very significant in the grand scheme of things?

“It's a cost they want to avoid, but they'll be looking at the bigger picture and looking at it in the round.” 

Man United’s next fixture will see them take on Liverpool at Anfield on 19 October.
