Stefan Borson: West Ham are in trouble as 'big worry' detailed

West Ham are facing an uphill battle to remain in the Premier League this season following their wretched run of form. 

West Ham were beaten 3-0 by Wolves on Saturday (3 January), leaving Nuno Espirito Santo’s side four points from safety in the relegation zone. 

Former London Stadium senior scout Mick Brown told Football Insider West Ham could sack Nuno if they lose against Nottingham Forest, who are fourth from bottom in the table. 

The Hammers are set to take on Sean Dyche’s side in a must-win game at the London Stadium on Tuesday (6 January).

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider West Ham are unlikely to take a chance on “aggressive” investment in the January transfer window despite their relegation fears. 

The Hammers have signed strikers Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe in the opening days of the window, with the deals worth a combined £42million. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about West Ham’s transfer deals, Borson said: “I think they're going to want to structure them in a contingent way around staying up, I'm sure. 

“I can't see how they can take a chance on very aggressive investment when there's a real prospect, like it or not, of relegation here. 

“They are going to need 22 points from 18 games, which should be achievable.” 

West Ham and Nottingham Forest in relegation shooutout

Borson insisted the “big worry” for West Ham is there aren’t many clubs who could be drawn into the relegation battle. 

“There are not that many teams in the relegation mix, realistically,” said Borson. 

“You just can't see any of the teams from 15th up being involved in a relegation battle. That means the relegation situation is Wolves obviously are down. Burnley are probably down, but they are only two points behind West Ham. 

“West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Leeds. Leeds are right on the edge of looking like they might be okay, especially as they've played Liverpool twice, so they've got Liverpool out of the way. 

“I think that would be the big worry for West Ham. They haven't got many outs. There are not that many teams that they can finish above.” 

West Ham could lose more than £60m in revenue if they are unable to avoid the drop this season.
