Stephen Welsh could be handed new role after Celtic transfer update - McAvennie
Frank McAvennie has claimed Stephen Welsh could play as a defensive midfielder if Celtic don't make any more signings.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker suggested Celtic need someone to take up the holding midfield position, especially for European matches.
The 22-year-old was left out of the squad for the Glasgow club's 5-0 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday (14 August).
As quoted by the Daily Record (12 August), Ange Postecoglou revealed the defender returned to training on Friday (12 August) following an injury.
Speaking to Sky Sports (13 August), the Celtic boss said his side are not in talks or negotiations with any players they have been linked with.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, McAvennie said: "I don’t think Welsh is going to get a game at centre-half when everyone is fit.
"He could play in midfield as a holding midfield player. That’s down to the manager. I think he’s comfortable with the ball at his feet so maybe the manager would want to try him in there.
"If we don’t sign anyone, on big European nights, you’ve got to have someone to be more aware defensively than attacking. That might work, it could be an option for Ange if he doesn’t get anyone. And it will get Welsh a game. He doesn’t let anyone down when he comes in but he’s not going to be number one."
