Liverpool have not given up keeping hold of Emre Can even though he is out of contract next month and discussions over a new deal have reached an impasse, according to a report.

The Telegraph claim that the Merseyside giants have "left the door open for more talks" with the Germany international as they wait on his final decision.

It is said that Can wants a release clause inserted in his deal, but Liverpool will not agree to this.

The Telegraph report the latest on Can's contract after revealing he is unlikely to feature in the Champions League final against Real Madrid after undergoing a scan on Monday.

There is a glimmer of hope that Can will stay at Liverpool but the club will have to push out the boat to get a deal agreed. Is he worth it? Well, yes, to an extent. The German is improving every season and is the finest central midfielder available to Jurgen Klopp. He can be frustrating, as his tendency to take an extra touch slows down attacks, but his energy, physicality and passing range make him a key player. Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum are fine operators, as they have proved with their displays en route to the Champions League final but none of them are as capable as Can on the ball. Aged 24 and approaching his peak years, the German knows the Premier League inside out and is an authoritative top-level performer who Jurgen Klopp clearly admires and usually selects to start when he is fit and firing. Liverpool are a better team with him in it than out.
