Marcus Rashford has been handed "a big opportunity" by interim Man United manager Ralf Rangnick, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Rashford, 24, had a poor start to the season but could thrive in his new central role.

Rangnick decided to play Rashford alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in a 4-2-2-2 formation on Sunday as United beat Crystal Palace.

However, the England international was the least involved of any United outfield player that started - touching the ball just 33 times. (WhoScored)

Robinson believes Rashford has been moved into a more advance role to help Ronaldo press from the front.

"Rashford has been given more of a free role in this system," he told Football Insider.

"He has not played a lot of football this season and I don't think he has done particularly well when he has played. I think he'll be the first to say that.

"Under a new manager in a new position, this is a big opportunity.

"There was signs against Palace that this system could suit him.

"Playing him up there with Ronaldo puts a little bit more leg power behind Cristiano in a defensive sense. Perhaps Rangnick has given thought to that. Rashford looks to be the one that has been tasked to press further up with Ronaldo."

Man United

A shoulder problem ruled Rashford out of the early part of the 2021-22 campaign.

Since his return to full fitness he has made 11 appearances across all competitions and scored thrice.
