The exit of John McDermott from Tottenham is a transfer hammer blow to the club, Football Insider has learned.

Spurs announced at the end of last week that their long-standing academy director and player development chief is quitting to join the Football Association as the new assistant technical director.

Tottenham sources have told Football Insider that losing McDermott is a "huge blow" and he will be "sorely missed" for his influence in developing and shaping the careers of their youngsters.

The exit of the popular Yorkshireman will also deprive Spurs of one of four members of their transfer committee.

McDermott had been part of that group along with chairman Daniel Levy, manager Jose Mourinho and chief scout Steve Hitchen in January and, previous to that, for a long period when Mauricio Pochettino was the fourth member of the quartet.

His absence will deprive Tottenham of an expert judge of young talent, shrewd thinker and superbly connected recruiter of youth players.

That will leave a major hole as Spurs continue to look to source hidden gems and rising stars both domestically and in the global market.

McDermott also has an impressive track record of developing age-group sides and young players, most notably the likes of current first-team stars Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Danny Rose as well as emerging trio Oliver Skipp, Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga.

McDermott leaves Spurs for the FA after 15 years at the club.
