Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham may have made "a mistake" allowing Marcus Edwards to leave the club in 2019.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one heaped praise on the 23-year-old for his impressive display against Spurs in the Champions League.

Edwards starred as Sporting Lisbon beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday (13 September).

As shown on BT Sport (13 September), the winger nearly scored a goal of the season contender after taking on numerous Spurs players.

The former England under-20 international has gone from strength to strength since permanently leaving Spurs for Portugal in September 2019.

He has four years left on his contract with Sporting Lisbon.

When asked by Football Insider if Spurs would be regretting not keeping hold of Edwards on the evidence of his performance in the Champions League, Robinson said: "He looked very good in that game.

"It is easy to get yourself up for it when you're playing against a team you previously played for. You feel like you have got something to prove.

"If he continues to do that week in, week out Tottenham may be regretful. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.

"If he plays to that level every week it looks like Spurs have made a mistake. Let's be honest though, they do not often make mistakes when it comes to letting players go."
