Manchester United have slapped a ridiculous £75million valuation on French attacker Anthony Martial, according to a report in the Mirror.

They've reportedly done it to ward off interest from Tottenham and other interested parties this summer, and Daniel Levy must give them a curt nod in response and move onto other targets.

There's no doubting there's a talented player in there, but Martial looks set to be yet another star sacrificed at the Old Trafford altar.

Things haven't gone well since his £54million move from Monaco in 2015.

Now 22, that was an incredible amount of money to spend on a 19-year-old who had scored 15 goals in 70 games for the French side.

He's played 136 games for Man United, scoring 36 goals and adding 26 assists, but he's never really been considered first choice under Jose Mourinho and their relationship is said to be strained.

The young attacker has said that he wants to leave this summer but United want to keep hold of him, and the best way to do that is to slap a totally unrealistic price tag on his head.

That's unlikely to impress Martial, who has said he wants to leave this summer after failing to get in the France World Cup squad.

In a recent interview in the Metro, Marcel Desailly said the 22-year-old wasn't good enough for the French squad.

And if he's not good enough for the admittedly talented French squad, and he's not good enough for the Man United first-team, he's not worth £75million.

To be honest, Man United would be lucky to recoup the £54million they paid for him three years ago and Tottenham must move onto other targets.

Martial could have been a huge hit at Tottenham under Pochettino, but United obviously want to keep hold of another talent just to let him warm the bench next season.

That's a shame for the player but not a surprise from the Red Devils.
