Tottenham have been keeping an eye on the progress of Angel Gomes as he looks set to leave Lille on a free transfer in the summer.

That is according to former Spurs, Man United and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that scouts have been keeping an eye on his performances in Ligue 1.

This comes after the midfielder confessed he is aware of clubs enquiring about his situation, but will remain focused on Lille until the end of the season.

Now, Brown has echoed that statement and explained the club have been putting together a scouting report before they make a final decision of whether to make a move.

The recruitment team at Tottenham are keen to add quality to their squad and view Gomes as a potential option for that, and will assess their squad once injured players return to gauge what they need.

Tottenham eye swoop to sign Angel Gomes on a free transfer

Gomes made his England debut under Lee Carsley earlier this season and left onlooking clubs impressed with the way he took to the top level of English football.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that clubs will be looking for him to show different dimensions to his game.

"Tottenham will only sign players who they feel are an improvement on what they've got," he told Football Insider.

"They'll look at their squad when the players are fully fit, and they're not a bad side at all.

"Angel Gomes, because of his size, has always faced questions about his ability to play against the big physical players you come up against.

"But that's never been a problem for him.

"Everybody you speak to at Manchester United tells you what a cracking person he is - you want people like that in your side.

"He's gone abroad and worked hard and come into the England squad through the under-21s, and he took to that level like a duck to water.

"But those were games in which England were dominant and needed somebody to keep the ball moving, and he's very good at that.

"What he's like when the game's against you and you've got to battle to hold on - is he the right player?

"That's what Tottenham will be trying to work out.

"They've been watching him play and they'll put together a report of what his pros and cons are, then they'll decide whether he's the right player for them.

"His availability for free will obviously be a big bonus too, and I'm sure they're not the only ones keeping an eye on that to make a move."
