'Outrageous' - Spurs Exclusive: Robinson rages at Alderweireld agent's 'Outlandish' claim

Paul Robinson was appalled by the comments of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld's agent after he suggested players should be able to leave contracts if asked to take a pay cut.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the comments were "outrageous" and "selfish" as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Toby Alderweireld's agent, Stijn Francis, wrote in the Guardian: "Clubs reducing their players' wages should accept that the players can terminate their employment for free and these clubs should no longer be able to ask a transfer fee if the player would like to leave."

Premier League clubs claimed last week that they would ask players to take a 30 percent wage cut but the Players' Football Association (PFA) is still yet to come to an agreement.

Spurs are one of a number of top-flight sides to furlough non-playing staff to “protect jobs” amid the financial struggles of the coronavirus crisis.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to Francis' comments, Robinson said: "The agent's comments are outlandish, selfish and money-driven. There are a lot more important things going on in the world at the moment. That is an outrageous comment. I do not think that has got any space. 

"Players have been wrongly singled out. Players are more than willing to do it and structured it in a way that they would have done without having been singled out.

"If any player does not want to or wants to try and use that as a tool to get out of a contract it is disgusting. I do not think any player would do and I hope he has been strongly misquoted. How to make yourself unpopular."
