Carlo Ancelotti is the driving force behind Real Madrid's pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, sources have told Football Insider.

The reigning Champions League winners are looking to make Liverpool's star man their latest "Galactico" signing in the wake of the arrival of Kylian Mbappe in the summer.

Sources with knowledge of Alexander-Arnold's situation say the Madrid boss has been a fan of the right-back since his time as manager of Everton, and is now pushing Los Blancos to capitalise on his potential availability.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and little progress has been made towards the extension of his deal as things stand.

Dani Carvajal's long-term injury blow has heightened Madrid's need to sign a new right-back, with the Spaniard expected to miss the rest of the season.

In the aftermath of that injury, Football Insider revealed Ancelotti's side are expected to intensify their pursuit in the January transfer window.

However, interest from the 15-time Champions League winners is proving difficult to resist for the 26-year-old, who is continuing to weigh up his options.

Alexander-Arnold will be free to discuss terms over a move abroad from January onwards, with each passing week edging him closer to the exit door.

While his boyhood club are still pushing for him to sign a new deal, delays in talks since the end of the summer transfer window have proven to be a concern.

Jude Bellingham's presence in Madrid is also thought to be an influence on Alexander-Arnold's decision given the close relationship between the pair.

While his future remains up in the air, the opportunity to line up alongside fellow superstars Mbappe, Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, and to work under Ancelotti, is proving hard to resist.
