Paul Robinson is "worried" by the prospect of Unai Emery becoming the new manager of Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League goalkeeper suggested the 49-year-old's appointment could be an expensive mistake by the club's new ownership.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein (2nd November), Emery is now the leading contender to take over at St. James' Park.

It is reported that Newcastle would have to pay Villarreal £5.1million in compensation to secure a deal for the ex-Arsenal boss.

Robinson believes neither would be a good choice for Newcastle in their current predicament.

"I don't think Emery or Martinez would be a good fit for Newcastle at the moment," he told Football Insider.

"They need a manager to keep them in the Premier League.

"I know Martinez has experience with Wigan and Emery has managed in the Premier League before but I just don't think either is the right man. The type of manager and players that they need, I don't see either being a good fit at the moment.

"Further down the line, I could see Martinez being a good choice.

"But, if I was a Newcastle fan right now, Emery certainly wouldn't excite me. I'd be slightly worried by that appointment in all honesty."
