Ruben Amorim's imminent Man United appointment could give them the edge in the race for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, sources have told Football Insider.

Talks have accelerated between Amorim and United following Erik ten Hag's sacking on Monday (28 October).

The Portuguese boss brought Gyokeres to Sporting in 2023 and he has flourished into one of the world's most highly-coveted forwards.

Interested clubs would also have to pay his £83million release clause in full in January – but reports have suggested his price tag could drop in the following summer window.

Sources say the Sweden international is a huge fan of Amorim, who has helped transform him to a force in Portugal.

Gyokeres, who is under contract until June 2028, has already scored 14 goals in 14 games for Sporting this term - including 12 strikes in nine games in the Portuguese top flight.

He managed 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games across all competitions last season.

Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund are currently on the books at Old Trafford but have struggled for goals in the new season.
