Paul Robinson has claimed Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk "took a risk" by putting his arm across Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the penalty area.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said the potential penalty would not have been overturned if given by the on-field referee.

Benfica wanted a penalty after Nunez went to ground after contact from Van Dijk's arm in the second half of Liverpool's 3-1 win at the Estadio da Luz on Tuesday.

However, the referee waved Jesus Gil Manzano waved played on a VAR decided not to intervene.

Robinson confessed he has seen penalties given for similar incidents in the past.

"You have seen them given," he told Football Insider's Dylan Childs.

"Van Dijk takes a risk when he puts his arm out like that.

"It is one of those that is a matter of opinion. VAR will never eliminate contentious decisions like that because it is subjective. If it is not given on the field it will not be given off it because it wasn't a clear and obvious error. There was not enough there to overturn it.

"But if it was given on the field I think it would have stood. It is in that grey area.

"Van Dijk was definitely taking a risk though. I don't think it was a penalty. It would have been soft but I have seen them given."
