Gabby Agbonlahor has backed West Ham to "freshen up" by replacing David Moyes with Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick this summer.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the former Everton boss may have reached the end of the line in football management after a "really unhappy" 2022-23 campaign.

However, it is believed that a change could be made in the summer – regardless of whether the Irons stay up or are relegated to the Championship.

Carrick has been linked with the London Stadium hot seat in recent weeks after impressing in his first managerial role at Middlesbrough.

He took charge of the Teessiders in October when they were 21st in the Championship - and has led them into third place.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It has been a bad season and the fans are really unhappy, even with the success they’ve had.

“If they stay up, it might be for the best to move on from Moyes.

“If there’s a Michael Carrick out there and willing to take the job – then why not freshen it up? It’s a completely new direction.

“He’s done so well with Middlesbrough and there aren’t many people who had a playing career like him. He knows the club too.

“Maybe Moyes’ time as a manager has come to an end. He’s had a great career, but it could be time to stop.”
