Wolves are expected to hire an experienced manager proven in the Premier League should they replace Gary O’Neil, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the club is “not going to take a chance on a young manager” with their next appointment.

O’Neil’s job is under pressure at Molineux after a disastrous start to the season which has seen the club win just once in the Premier League, while they also boast the worst defensive record in the division.

David Moyes and Graham Potter are being considered as potential replacements, with Football Insider revealing the club are leaning towards the former Chelsea boss.

The focus for Wolves is on bringing someone in who can make the team robust and hard to beat to ensure Premier League safety at the end of the campaign.

Wolves currently sit 19th in the Premier League table, but they are only two points adrift of 17th.

The club are unlikely to choose a “forward-thinking” manager to replace O’Neil due to the potential risks involved if that decision doesn’t work out.

It is believed that Potter or Moyes would potentially divide opinions due to the style of football they would bring, rather than being a progressive manager.

Football Insider revealed that the squad remains fully behind O’Neil and will continue to back him and fight for him on the pitch.

Wolves defeated Southampton last weekend (9 November) to head into the international break with their first win of the season, which took some pressure off O’Neil.

The club will be back in action on Saturday (23 November) when they face Fulham.
