McAvennie 'amazed' by Turnbull as he reveals 'first name on Celtic teamsheet'

Frank McAvennie has hailed David Turnbull as “magnificent” after Celtic secured a win over Motherwell.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the midfielder has to be one of the first names in the teamsheet.

Turnbull, 22, scored a sensational long-range strike as Celtic beat Motherwell 2-0 on Saturday.

This was the central midfielder’s seventh goal of the season in just 19 total outings.

Turnbull signed for Celtic from Motherwell last summer and became a regular starter during his first season at Parkhead.

He played 34 times in all competitions during the 2020-21 campaign and scored nine goals.

McAvennie has been blown away by Turnbull’s impressive performances ever since he arrived last summer.

“The boy is magnificent,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I was singing his praises last season and he’s carried that form on into this season.

“There was that one wobble against Leverkusen but I’ve already said that wasn’t his fault.

“He should never have been there. He’s got to be one of the first names on the teamsheet now. Some of the things he does, he’s amazing.

“That was a cracking bit of business to get him in, I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Turnbull can play as a more attacking midfielder, as he displayed on Saturday, despite his excellent defensive capabilities.

He has made 54 total appearances for Celtic and forced himself into the Scotland squad on a regular basis.
