McAvennie: Celtic must start Bolingoli v Dundee United after what I've just seen in person

Frank McAvennie wants to see Boli Bolingoli start for Celtic again this weekend.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after watching his recent performance in person.

Bolingoli, 26, was handed a surprise outing as Celtic lost 1-0 to Livingston last weekend, his only senior 90 minutes of the campaign.

It was his first outing under Ange Postecoglou and his first start for Celtic since February 2020.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland and quoted by the Glasgow Times, Postecoglou explained he had given the left-back a chance after impressing in training.

He was cast out by the club after breaching Covid protocols last season and sent on loan to Basaksehir.

McAvennie wants to see Bolingoli start against Dundee United on Sunday after being left out against Raith Rovers on Thursday night.

“I was at the game last weekend,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They made me watch it, unfortunately. That was 90 minutes of my life I’m not getting back.

“I will be honest, Bolingoli was the best player in that Celtic team, solid. He defended really well. He was the only bright spark.

“I always liked him when he was playing, he is a better defender than Taylor.

“He was putting himself about and getting stuck in, that’s saying something because Celtic were awful.

“I think he has to start again this weekend.”

Bolingoli signed for Celtic in 2019 and has made 30 total outings for the club to date.

He made 18 appearances while on loan in Turkey last season as he helped İstanbul Başakşehir finish 12th in the Super Lig.
