Frank McAvennie has tipped James Forrest to return for Celtic against Aberdeen on Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops and St Mirren striker is excited to see the 29-year-old play with January loan signing Jonjoe Kenny on the right flank.

Celtic have been without Forrest since 19 September after he suffered an ankle injury against St. Johnstone – but he returned to full training at the club’s Lennoxtown headquarters earlier this month.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Neil Lennon believes his side’s title defence would have been very different had the winger not been missing for the majority of the campaign.

The Scotland international contributed two goals and one assist in seven appearances prior to his ankle problem.

When asked for his thoughts on Forrest’s return to Neil Lennon’s side, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think he will be on the bench against Aberdeen.

“I hated it when managers took a while to bring me back into the side. After one week of training I wanted to be back in the team. I think James will be the same.

“He will work well with Jonjoe Kenny. I think those two will work really well together.

“I thought Mikey Johnston would have been given more game time while James has been out but it has not happened.

“Forrest will definitely be pushing for a starting place towards the end of this month.”

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Lennon said: “James now has to do some straight line running.

“He’ll not make this weekend obviously but we’ll assess him for Aberdeen next week.”
