McAvennie fumes at 'lazy' Ralston after 'comedy' Celtic display

Frank McAvennie was not impressed with Anthony Ralston’s defending as Celtic lost to Rela Betis on Thursday.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, expressed his frustration as the Hoops threw away a two-goal lead.

Albian Ajeti and Josip Juranovic fired Celtic into an early lead before Betis came back and won the game 4-3.

Ralston scored Celtic’s third but his side were unable to snatch an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game.

This was his third goal of the season after the defender shone through the early weeks of the campaign.

However, McAvennie was not impressed as Ralston was caught out of position when Celtic conceded their first.

“The first goal, Ralston was caught out of position,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It was a comedy of errors, Soro was running out and didn’t know what to do.

“He should have stopped the cross. Ralston should have been there first and foremost.

“Ralston wasn’t tracking back last night. I know he’s trying hard and doing well, scoring goals which is impressive for a full back.

“I just want my defenders to defend, it’s lazy. Celtic can’t keep playing well and losing.

“The manager needs to tighten it up because we keep conceding.”

Celtic’s next game in the Europa League is against Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the month.
