Frank McAvennie has slammed Kristoffer Ajer for claiming he has had his best ever season for Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Parkhead legend said the 22-year-old is “blaming everybody but himself” for Celtic’s “terrible” defending this season.
As quoted by the Daily Record, the Norway international claimed he has had his “best ever season” despite the club’s poor form.
Only Callum McGregor has played more than Ajer this season, who has made 40 appearances across all competitions.
McAvennie said the centre-half has been part of a “terrible” defence this season.
“I heard Ajer come out and say this is the best season he has had,” he told Football Insider.
“I was thinking, ‘Are you sure? I thought a defender’s job was to stop goals going in.’
“The defence has been awful this season. They have been terrible and they have not stood up to the challenge.
“For Ajer to come out and say it is his best season, is he having a laugh? He has been part of the problem this season.
“It is almost like saying, ‘It is not my fault.’ That is what I took from it. It was all about him. It is as if he is blaming everybody but himself and you cannot have that.”
Ajer said: “When you play for Celtic and the expectations are that you will win trophies, it is difficult to focus on individual achievements.
“But if I am only to look at my performances, it may have been my best season at the club.”
