McAvennie in disbelief at what's happening to Turnbull and it's a 'terrible slant' on Celtic

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has slammed the coaching staff at Celtic Park over their handling of David Turnbull this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Parkhead legend said the repeated withdrawal of the 21-year-old is a "slant on the club" if it is down to fitness and stamina.

Turnbull has been withdrawn in 10 of the previous 11 league games for the Hoops, including Sunday's 0-0 draw at Dundee United.

The summer signing from Motherwell has been Celtic's standout performer this season, with eight goals and six assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.

McAvennie wants to know the real reason why Turnbull is being withdrawn.

"If he is being withdrawn purely down to stamina and purely down to fitness, then it is a slant on Celtic football club because they are not getting him fit," he told Football Insider.

"They kept taking Paddy McCourt off and they kept taking Rogic off because they apparently couldn't last the 90 minutes.

"It is a terrible slant on the coaching staff if they cannot get people fit for 90 minutes, they are not doing their job.

"I don't think the boy Turnbull has done anything wrong so we need to know why he is being taken off. He is the man of the match and then he gets taken off after 70 minutes.

"There might be something going on that we don't know but if it is fitness, that is down to the training staff."
