McAvennie issues 'big' West Brom verdict after Tom Rogic news confirmed

Frank McAvennie has tipped Tom Rogic to thrive under Steve Bruce at West Brom.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker insisted the Baggies are a “big club” and not a downgrade from the Scottish Premiership champions.

On 12 September, West Brom confirmed the signing of the Australia international on a one-year deal that includes the option of a further 12 months.

The midfielder joined the Championship club following the expiration of his Parkhead contract at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The Australian is yet to make a competitive appearance for the West Midlands club.

When asked if West Brom is a step down from Celtic for Rogic, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Not really because he’s over 30 now.

West Brom is a big club. Everyone thought he was going back to Australia or even to America but he obviously still thinks he’s got that competitive streak in him.

I don’t think he would’ve played much for Celtic, no matter how much he was a wonderful player. The pace the boys are playing now, Tom might have been a bit slow. There will have been options for him, there’s no way he didn’t but he obviously thinks West Brom is the one. He’s got those itchy feet.

When I left West Ham I went to Hong Kong and it was a great time but the football wasn’t up to my standard and I came back and signed for Celtic.

Steve Bruce will look after Rogic, I think it’ll be a partnership made in heaven because Rogic is one hell of a player and if Steve Bruce can get the best out of him, it’s only good for them.
