McAvennie makes big Howe claim after 'whispers' from his Celtic sources

Frank McAvennie claims Eddie Howe is back in the frame for the Celtic job.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told Celtic fans to not read into the club’s recent statement about their ongoing hunt for a manager.

Last week, the Hoops released a statement in which they confirmed the hunt for a new boss was ongoing.

In late March, Howe reached a verbal agreement with Celtic following talks in London before having second thoughts.

Celtic have tabled what is said by Football Insider sources to be a “wonderful offer” to the 43-year-old former Cherries boss.

McAvennie, who lives in Glasgow and remains closely connected to Celtic, claims fans shouldn’t read too much into the statement as the club are covering themselves in case Howe backs out again.

“You can’t read into that,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Even if they have someone in mind they have to cover themselves. The whispers I’m hearing up here are that it’s Eddie Howe.

“Even if they have got Howe, they need to keep their options open. They are too big a club to not do that.

“They can’t be left in the lurch if something was to happen whether it be Howe or someone else.

“They have to keep their options open.”

Howe, 43, has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season.

Celtic have two games remaining of their Scottish Premiership season before the campaign wraps up on Sunday.
