McAvennie makes 'phenomenal' Kent claim after 'massive' Rangers boost

Frank McAvennie insists Rangers need Ryan Kent in their side if they are to have a successful season.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the attacker as “phenomenal” as he returned to the side.

Kent, 24, made his comeback from injury as Rangers drew 1-1 with Brondby on Thursday night.

The attacker came on before the hour mark and set up fellow substitute Ianis Hagi for the equaliser.

He sat out 10 games across all competitions with a hamstring problem as the Gers struggled in Europe.

McAvennie insists a fully fit Kent eases Steven Gerrard’s selection headache as he should start every game for the club.

“They need Kent back,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He is a phenomenal talent, I’ve said it so many times.

“The boy can do special things. It’s no surprise he’s linked with a move to the Premier League all the time.

“He’s that good. Rangers have loads of options but they can never really replace Kent.

“It’s a massive boost to have him back because it’s a position Gerrard doesn’t need to worry about.

“If he’s fit, he starts. It’s that simple. Hopefully, for Rangers, he can get a good run in the team and keep that fitness.”

Rangers face Ross County in the Premiership on Sunday.

They will look to extend their lead over Celtic with their city rival only four points behind in second place.
