McAvennie names the only five Celtic players who should survive summer cull

Celtic need to completely overhaul their squad this summer and only five players should survive the cut, according to Frank McAvennie.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Parkhead legend named Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, Ismaila Soro, David Turnbull and Kristoffer Ajer as the only first team players he wants to see remain at the club.

There has already been big change off the field at Parkhead, with Neil Lennon resigning last month and Peter Lawwell announcing he will step down as chief executive at the end of the season.

The futures of Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Kristoffer Ajer are the subject of much speculation, with the trio all out of contract in the summer of 2022.

While Jonjoe Kenny, Diego Laxalt, Shane Duffy and Mohamed Elyounoussi, all on loan at Celtic, are set to return to the parent clubs at the end of the season.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on who should stay this summer, McAvennie said: “There needs to be a complete overhaul of the squad.

“They are not playing as a team, they are all playing individually and that is because some of them want to get a move away.

“There is only five players that I would like to keep from that squad – Brown, McGregor, Turnbull, Soro and Ajer. They are the five players who I would build the team around.

“It is then about bringing more players in and they need to spend big. They have big spending to do and if they don’t we are in danger of losing out to Rangers for the next couple of seasons.”
