Frank McAvennie has ripped into Tottenham defender Eric Dier after Wednesday night’s win against Wolfsberger.

The former West Ham and Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old, who is “clearly not a centre-half”, is letting Jose Mourinho’s side down.

Dier started the 4-0 Europa League win over Wolfsberger – his fourth consecutive start in all competitions.

The England international was criticised for his performance in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham as Spurs lost further ground on the European spots.

Mourinho has heavily rotated the personnel at the heart of his defence this season but Dier, who has made 29 appearances across all competitions, has been entrusted more times than any other centre-half.

McAvennie is baffled by Mourinho’s continued selection of Dier and claimed that it says a lot about the other defenders at the club.

“I think Mourinho will turn it around this season, I really do,” he told Football Insider.

“It is just little things which are going wrong for Spurs at the moment.

“There’s a couple of players there who are letting him down. I’m sorry but Dier is clearly not a centre-half.

“Obviously Mourinho has not got any decent defenders, otherwise he would not play the boy. I do not get why he is putting a midfielder in at centre-half, they think they can play anywhere and they can’t.

“I am sure Mourinho will turn it around though.”
