Frank McAvennie has ripped into Celtic striker Albian Ajeti for his lazy performance against St Mirren.
The Hoops legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 23-year-old “does not want to move” and was “strolling about” on Wednesday night.
Ajeti started his third successive match as Neil Lennon’s side closed the gap on league-leaders Rangers with a 4-0 win at St Mirren Park.
The £5million summer signing from West Ham has contributed a respectable six goals and four assists in his 26 appearances this season.
However, against St Mirren he only touched the ball 29 times – eight less than Celtic’s goalkeeper Scott Bain (37). (Wyscout)
When asked for his thoughts on Ajeti’s worrying statistic, McAvennie told Football Insider: “That stat says everything.
“If your goalkeeper gets more touches than you, it says a lot.
“I would make a case for him if he made runs in behind. Sometimes as a centre-forward you can create space for other players without getting the ball but he does not even do that. I’m not going to stick up for him though because he does not do that.
“If Edouard was to leave, I would not be satisfied with Ajeti up front.
“He does not want to move! I do not get it because he wants to be in the box so what does he not turn defenders.
“He is a good runner so I do not understand why he does not come short and then spin. You cannot just stand there. Make an angle for the boy, do something. At least Griffiths sits on the last man’s shoulders and plays the angles.
“Yes, Ajeti will score goals but you need more from a striker. He was strolling about on Wednesday night.”
