McAvennie slams 'one of the worst I've seen' ahead of Tottenham clash against West Ham

Frank McAvennie has told Tottenham fans the pressure will intensify on Nuno Espirito Santo if the team lost to his old club West Ham on Sunday.

The former Irons hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, isn’t sure why Spurs fans have been getting carried away this week.

Tottenham have beaten NS Mura, Aston Villa and Newcastle but then slumped to a surprise 1-0 Europa Conference League defeat to Vitesse Arnhem last night.

Previous Premier League results had Nuno Espirito Santo facing some very early pressure, coming to a head after a 3-1 derby loss to Arsenal.

McAvennie claims the recent upturn in results had been nothing to shout about after beating an “awful” Newcastle side and some Slovenian minnows.

“My message would be, don’t get carried away,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s an awful Newcastle team, one of the worst I’ve seen. It’s a mystery how Kane didn’t score more.

“Yes, the tide has turned in the league and things are looking rosy again. But what happens when they come up against a proper side?

“Villa are not at it this season and Newcastle are awful. Don’t get me started on that team from Slovenia.

“They made hard work of that, truth be told. Beat West Ham, which won’t be easy, then maybe we can have that conversation.

“But what happens if West Ham win? The pressure on Nuno goes up again.”

Tottenham are next in action in the Premier League against West Ham on Sunday.

Spurs failed to beat the Hammers last season, throwing away a three-goal lead during their first encounter of the 2020-21 campaign.

In other news, an insider has backed two Tottenham players to leave the club in January after a major development.
