McAvennie stunned by 'amazing' Celtic signing Giakoumakis after what he's seen

Frank McAvennie is expecting big things from new Celtic signing Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest claims after the Hoops secured their tenth summer signing.

The Hoops confirmed the signing of Giakoumakis on a five-year deal on deadline day from VVV Venlo.

Speaking on The Celtic Exchange Podcast, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph said the striker would’ve likely cost £8.6million had VVV Venlo not been relegated last season.

Giakoumakis finished the 2020-21 campaign as the Eredivisie’s top scorer with 26 goals despite his side’s relegation.

McAvennie was blown away when he heard the striker scored so many goals for a relegated side.

“Let me tell you something, that’s amazing,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I mean, when I saw that, he’s clearly a very good striker. If you are scoring that many goals in a side that got relegated, that’s incredible.

“Clearly he wasn’t the problem in the team. He probably only had 26 chances all season, he must be clinical.

“I can’t wait to see him, I hope he and Kyogo can strike up a partnership because they could be deadly for Celtic.

“I can’t get over that, 26 goals in a relegated team, how many would he have scored in a good team?

“You can’t put this expectation on him but I’m expecting big things.”

Giakoumakis could make his debut this weekend when Ange Postecoglou’s side welcome Ross County to Parkhead.

Speaking to club media shortly after signing the striker revealed he is looking forward to “writing history” at Celtic.
