McAvennie tips Celtic to announce new signing next week who will bring back CL football

Frank McAvennie insists Celtic still need more signings before the transfer window closes.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Celtic shouldn’t stand still before the 31st August deadline.

The Hoops have been busy this summer, signing Liel Abada, Carl Starfelt, Kyogo Furuhashi, Joe Hart and James McCarthy.

Abada, Furuhashi and Hart have all starred in the last week as Celtic picked up two vital wins against Jablonec and Dundee.

Celtic faced Jablonec in the Europa League after crashing out of the Champions League a week prior.

McAvennie insists Celtic need to bring in more players this summer so they can stay in the Champions League next season.

“We still need more players, we need to compete,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“My idea of Celtic is getting to the Champions League group stage every year. That’s where they should be.

“I’m not saying we should be winning the Champions League or the Europa League.

“That’s not asking too much, then you get to play against the big boys.

“At the worst, you can finish third and get in the Europa League.

“That’s not me aiming too high, that’s realistic for Celtic and what should be going for.

“Ange needs to buy with that in mind and I think he will. They need to be signings who can take us there.

“They need to be soon, next week would be ideal and I can see it happening.”

Celtic also signed youngsters Osaze Urghoghide and Liam Shaw from Sheffield Wednesday.

Both players picked up minutes during pre-season and Shaw particularly impressed some senior stars.
