McAvennie tips Celtic to bin Bitton after what he's seen from Turnbull

Frank McAvennie claims Celtic have no need for Nir Bitton amid Maccabi Tel Aviv speculation.

The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Hoops midfield has evolved and there is no longer a place for the 29-year-old.

Bitton has been mainly deployed as a makeshift centre-back in recent seasons despite spending the majority of his Parkhead career in the midfield.

The Scottish Sun have reported that Bitton is a target for Maccabi Tel Aviv this summer but added that the Hoops won’t let him leave on the cheap.

When asked about Bitton’s potential departure, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “He’s been in and out. He’s not a centre half and that’s the only place he’s getting a game now.

“He’s a midfield player but unfortunately the midfield has to be energetic now and he’s very similar to Scott Brown.

“He likes to sit in there and just play wee passes but we don’t need that now. Celtic need people like [Ismaila] Soro and [David] Turnbull.

“He’s not going to get a game before those guys in midfield so he has to play in the defence and he’s not a centre-half.

“He gets caught sometimes but that’s not his fault because he’s not a centre-half. He’s done what he’s been asked at Celtic so you’ve got to give him credit for that.

“If he gets back over to Israel then good luck to him, he can’t keep playing at the back.”

Bitton has made 13 Scottish Premiership appearances so far this season with the Israel international picking up one goal.

He was sent off in the most recent Old Firm game for bringing down Alfredo Morelos as the Colombian broke through on goal with the Gers going on to win that clash 1-0.

In other Celtic news, McAvennie: Celtic have just agreed to let go ‘better player’ than Frimpong.
