McAvennie wants Celtic to sell two stars Brendan Rodgers 'doesn't like' - 'Get it right this time'

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Celtic must get rid of centre-backs Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke as Brendan Rodgers "doesn't like them".

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie detailed how he would change Celtic's defence in January and insisted they need a "big lad", but urged the club to let the two summer signings to leave.

Nawrocki moved from Legia Warsaw for a reported £4.3million but has made just two appearances in all competitions, while £3million Lagerbielke started four league games before not even making the matchday squad.

Lagerbielke did notch Celtic's late goal in their 2-1 win against Feyenoord in the Champions League group stage, but the pair have failed to meet expectations.

McAvennie had other suggestions for how Rodgers could fix his backline, but was adamant that these centre-backs needs to "go and play" away from Parkhead.

"Of course Rodgers needs to reinforce the defence," he told Football Insider.

"No disrespect to Scales but he's been getting raved about after the Feyenoord game, but he shouldn't have been Man of the Match.

"Scales has done well, but I'd rather see him at left-back and bring in a big lad and get it right this time.

"Nat Phillips, he looks like Coco the Clown! He doesn't run and it looks like he's not ready or fighting.

"Bring in a good centre-half to play with Carter-Vickers.

"Rodgers has two centre-backs that he doesn't like, so what's the point in having them?

"If Brendan doesn't like them, there's only one winner. Let Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke get out, go and play somewhere else."
