McLeish 'amazed' by Jota after 'exceptional' Celtic footage emerges

Alex McLeish is “amazed” at the price Celtic paid for Jota after the winger scored in the opening game of the season on Sunday (31 July).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Rangers and Premier League manager said he was “sceptical” of the 23-year-old when he arrived at Parkhead but is now a big fan.

The Bhoys signed Jota permanently this summer after a successful loan spell with the club last season.

The Scottish champions took up the option to buy the forward from Benfica for a fee £6.75million.

As shown on Sky Sports (31 July), the winger scored in the Hoops’ first game of the season against Aberdeen.

Ange Postecoglou’s side beat the Dons 2-0 at Parkhead.

Stephen Welsh scored Celtic’s opening goal of the game.

McLeish has been impressed by what he has seen from the Portuguese winger so far.

He was outstanding last year,” he told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I was a wee bit sceptical at the beginning but the more the season progressed he proved that he had consistency in his game and he was not just a one-off show pony.

He has turned out to be an exceptional player and I was amazed at the price that Celtic got him for.

Jota made 40 appearances for the Glasgow club across all competitions last season.

During those outings he scored 13 goals and provided 14 assists.
